May saw the stop off of the CocoaConf tour in Portland, Oregon. The trip coincided with a visit from Air Force One and President Obama, although he decided that he was too busy to learn about all things Cocoa. It was yet another brilliant event put on by the Klein family – with some great presentations and fascinating discussions. Although scheduled to present the “funeral march” of my “Levelling Up with iOS 8” talk, by popular request, I also resurrected “To drawRect or not to drawRect?”. As ever, the response was great, and I’d like to extend a thank you to all who attended, especially the other speakers and the Klein family.

Following this, I jetted down the coast to San Francisco to attend Apps World North America. Once again it was great to see what’s going on in the app development industry. I met loads of people and had some great conversations.

In addition to Apps World, Moscone was also hosting Internet of Things (IoT) World, and there was a real buzz around the room. There were people there offering widgets for collecting loads of data from all manner of things – from temperature sensors, through remote cameras to advanced industrial sensors. There was also a large collection of vendors offering services to collect, store and query this data. The IoT space feels like it will be really exciting over the coming years to see how it evolves, especially with respect to visualising this vast amount of data.
